Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
