Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
