The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
